Detroit, Michigan (November 1, 2011) – Dr. Akosua Barthwell Evans, Chief Executive Officer of The Barthwell Group, has been awarded the 2011 Entrepreneur Leadership Award by the Women of Color Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (“STEM”) Conference sponsored by Northrop Grumman. The award will be presented at the Black Tie Gala on November 5, 2011, hosted by Chrysler and AT&T.
The Women of Color STEM Conference recognizes outstanding women in the STEM fields and provides dynamic opportunities for professional development, networking, and recruiting. The conference is focused on the development of STEM women, and ensures that the superior achievements and importance of these women in STEM-related fields are highly visible.
As the recipient of the 2011Entrepreneur Leadership Award, Dr. Evans has been an exemplary owner of a thriving, minority-owned company whose professional and personal experience has endeavored towards the creation of talent networks of, and educational opportunities for, highly qualified underrepresented persons in the STEM disciplines among Fortune 500 corporations and a variety of higher education institutions. Dr. Evans has also demonstrated a long-term commitment to community service, which has been illustrated through her meaningful service on more than 18 boards and advisory committees throughout the United States. These range from establishing The Friends of Education at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, developing the Warner Thornton McGuinn Scholarship Fund at the Yale Law School, to participatingin a campaign to revitalize the Historic Boston-Edison neighborhood in Detroit.
